The volunteers at the Hayling Seaside Railway have been hard at work
of late, putting together their 2010 Events Programme. The fun begins
during the Easter School Holidays, when the one mile narrow gauge
'light' railway between Beachlands Funland and Eastoke Corner via
Mengham Road Halt, will be operating daily. With special 'Easter Bunny
Runs' scheduled for the Bank Holiday Weekend of Good Friday 2nd
April to Easter Monday 5th April, featuring free quiz sheets and
chocolate eggs for the children.
Saturday 24th April sees the welcome return after a year's absence
of the railway's popular Model Railway Exhibition “In The Shed”, at
Beachlands railway station next to the Funland Amusement Park. As
well as a range of fine-scale model railways and trade stands on
display in the depot itself, a frequent service of narrow gauge
passenger trains and heritage demonstration 'goods trains', will be in
operation between Beachlands and Eastoke.
On Sunday 23rd May the Seaside Railway will be joining forces with
Funland, the Local Locomotion and Hayling Legends vintage car
groups to produce their annual 'Vintage Transport Gathering' at
Beachlands railway station. A wide variety of vintage transport exhibits
will be on public display in the Funland Car Park, while vintage trains
will be in operation on the Seaside Railway.
The highlight for many of the 2010 season will be the welcome return to
the Hayling Seaside Railway, of the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway
Trust's veteran coal-fired steam locomotive “Wendy”, from its usual
operating base at the Amberley Chalk Pits Museum. The classic
locomotive built by W.G. Bagnall of Stafford in 1919, will be gracing the
Hayling Island rails for a total of SIX weekends this year, hauling
passenger trains on the 12th/13th, 19th/20th and 26th/27th June,
plus the 11th/12th, 18th/19th and 25th/26th September.
There will be added interest on the weekend of 19th and 20th June as
railwayʼs vintage diesel locomotives and industrial goods wagons,
provide a supporting programme of light railway 'goods trains', passing
the steam hauled passenger trains at Mengham Road Halt.
